Spider Veins

Spider veins are smaller, red, purple or blue in color and generally do not bulge above the skin. The causes of spider veins is not known, however genetics, age, gender and number of pregnancies may contribute to the development of spider veins. They are common, affecting nearly half of all Americans over 50 years of age.

Spider veins are not generally dangerous and typically do not cause you any pain. But if you experience itching, burning or an achy, heavy feeling in the legs, this may be an early sign of venous insufficiency, a condition which can lead to varicose veins.

Champlain Valley Vascular offers a non-surgical treatment for spider veins called sclerotherapy.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a proven and widely used treatment for surface-level spider veins. It is FDA-approved, and performed by injecting a chemical substance called a ASCLERA directly into the affected veins. This causes the veins to harden from the inside out, so they can no longer fill with blood. The veins close off and are reabsorbed by your body over a few weeks.

Side effects are very rare, and you are able to return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure. Wearing compression stockings for 2-3 days after the procedure can improve the cosmetic appearance.
